Wacol Driver Training Facility Project

Overview of Project

The Site forms part of a police academy and training facility at Wacol, adjacent to a prison and Brisbane River.  The existing Site area consists of remnant urban bushland.

The landscape intent is to provide a landscape scheme that is environmentally responsive and enhances the appearance of the proposed development.  Locally native plant species are selected to provide long term visual interest through a planting scheme displaying a variety of colours, texture, form and seasonal interest.

Disturbance to existing and local fauna and flora is to be minimised and amelioration strategies put in place so as to ensure the ecological values of the Site and adjoining land are enhanced.  This is achieved through minimal removal of existing vegetation and replacement planting of similar species to form cohesive habitats.

An ecological sustainable solution has been achieved which integrates the various engineering and safety constraints, to include:

  • Main Track – a high speed circuit and Four Wheel Drive Track,
  • Scenario Village & Manoeuvring Areas – an urban streetscape & skid pans,
  • Driver Training Centre/Visitor Facilities,
  • Bio-Retention Lake – stormwater control,
  • Visual screen/buffer planting.

Scope of Works

The scope of work included:

  • Earthworks,
  • Roadworks,
  • Drainage,
  • Water Reticulation,
  • Sewerage Reticulation,
  • Manoeuvring Area Irrigation,
  • Landscaping,
  • Electrical Reticulation & Street Lighting.

Outcome

  • Redundant services from previous land uses,
  • Construction of road base to suit various pavement surfaces,
  • Stormwater management due to large upstream catchment areas and steep topography.

Challenges

Project was completed ahead of time and under budget.
