The dredging of Currumbin Creek has been completed for 2015. Approximately 40,000m3 of sand was pumped to Palm Beach this year.
Neumann Contractors have undertaken the dredging works in Currumbin Creek for many years now. The works are an integral part of the Gold Coast City Council's program to maintain and replenish the sand on Gold Coast beaches. Each year around 25-40,000 m3 of clean sand and dredged from Currumbin Creek to replenish the sand on Palm Beach. The Nu Compact, a 250mm Cutter Suction Dredge, a land based booster pump and up to 1.2km of pipeline were used to complete the works.
Each year sand naturally travels northward along our coastline. Sand travelling across the entrance to Currumbin Creek can become trapped and cause infilling of the mouth of the creek. The trapped sand also contributes to the erosion on Palm Beach, which is just north of Currumbin Creek.
The Gold Coast City Council are committed to keeping Currumbin Creek in the best possible condition and in doing so can also help one of the Gold Coast greatest assets, Palm Beach. Without the annual beach nourishment program the extreme erosion problem could render the beach a hazard.
