Kooragang Berth

Situated at Port of Newcastle, NSW this project involved the dredging of 2,600,000m3 of sandy material and 750,000m3 of contaminated fines in conjunction with the construction of a new berth and swing basin at the Kooragang Coal Terminal. Three of Neumann's 16 inch dredges and nine booster stations were used to complete this contract. Five containment ponds were constructed to store the dredged fines. The size of Neumann dredges enabled the detailed work around the berth to be carried out. Larger dredges would have pumped the contaminated fines too quickly to allow efficient settlement in the containment ponds. The five fines disposal ponds were used alternately and the fines took about a day to settle before clean water was decanted. Pumping distances were up to 4.5km. As the dredging schedule was tight, Neumanns had each dredge operating 130 hours per week with very high availability.
