The AEW&C Facilities Project involved the construction of a concrete parking apron and associated infrastructure required to service the Royal Australian Air Force’s new AEW&C aircraft.

The earthworks component utilised a combination of on-site and imported fill sand which was compacted in a flooded condition and proof-rolled with Marco rollers provided by the Department of Defence.  An aircraft pavement consisting of 200mm of FCR subbase underlying 350-400mm of 40MPa hand placed concrete base was then constructed over the top of the sand subgrade.

The project was undertaken adjacent to a fully operational runway and taxiway with strict traffic control required to prevent injuries and damage to plant and equipment on site as well as the RAAF’s fleet of aircraft. The extreme and uncommon weather conditions encountered during this project along with the concurrent building of the aircraft hangars in conjunction with the nearby take off and landing of aircraft made this a totally new experience for Neumann Contractors.
